Northeast Texas Bird Report  - April 2016

This is the NETFO bird report for April.    Highlights include two Swallow-tailed Kites, a White-tailed Kite, a Pacific Loon, a Cinnamon Teal,  Hudsonian Godwits, Wild Turkeys, and Bobolinks.  Thanks to all who birded and sent in their results and thanks again to Luanne for everything.

NETFO

Found in six counties, the peak of 20 Black-bellied Whistling Ducks were found at Cedar Creek Reservoir in Henderson county on 4/17 (ebird MS).  A single Ross’s Goose was reported from a new location in Quitman in Wood county on 4/2 (ebird TK), while the “normal” one in Rains county was tallied on 4/23 (ebird BC,GC,SG).  A Cinnamon Teal was recorded at RC WMA in Freestone county on 4/17 (ebird DC,DL).  Five Red-breasted Mergansers were tallied at LTW in Van Zandt county on 4/12 (ebird RK).

Two Northern Bobwhite were reported from Harrison county on 4/30 (ebird LP).  Three groups of Wild Turkeys were reported from the NETFO area during April!  Seven Wild Turkeys were tallied in Panola county on 4/15 (ebird JHu), while five were found in Lamar county on 4/16 (ebird EJ). And on 4/3 a single Wild Turkey was found in Fannin county (ebird GC,SG).  A Pacific Loon was found at LTW in Van Zandt county on 4/12 (ebird RK).  An Eared Grebe was reported from RC WMA in Freestone county on 4/2 (ebird SH), while another Eared Grebe was reported on both 4/9 and 4/10 at LOP in Marion county (ebird JS).  

Reported from four counties, the max of eight Anhingas was tallied at Tyler State Park on 4/6 (ebird BS).   Found in both counties of RC WMA, a max of two American Bitterns were tallied on 4/5 in Freestone county (ebird CW,RH), while also noted by several observers on different dates a max of two American Bitterns were also found on 4/10 at Mineola Nature Preserve in Wood county (ebird EV). Four Tricolored Herons were counted at RC WMA in Navarro county on 4/10 (PB).  A Black-crowned Night-Heron was reported from Henderson county on 4/18 (LBe), while a whopping 20 Black-crowned Night-Herons were tallied at RC WMA in Navarro county on 4/10 (PB).  Noted in four counties the max of six Yellow-crowned Night-Herons came from Van Zandt county on 4/2 and 4/27 (ebird RK).  The sole report of 15 White Ibis came from Mineola Nature Preserve on 4/15 (ebird EV).  White-faced Ibis findings were restricted to RC WMA, with a max of eight tallied on 4/10 in Navarro county (PB).

Probably the species of the month, we had not one report but two reports of Swallow-tailed Kites!  One was reported from LTW in Van Zandt county on 4/12 (ebird RK), while another Swallow-tailed Kite was photographed in Navarro county on 4/22 (ebird SL).  What makes these sightings extra interesting is that near neighbors in Fort Worth, near Shreveport and in Arkansas near Texarkana all had reports of Swallow-tailed Kites in April.  I looked in the last 10 years during April, and only found one report in ebird of a Swallow-tailed Kite and that was near Dallas in 2010.

And no small potatoes, a White-tailed Kite was observed in Fannin county on 4/10 (MW).   The first Mississippi Kite was reported from Gregg county on 4/12 (ebird LP).  Reported from four counties, the first Swainson’s Hawk was tallied on 4/7 in Navarro county (ebird JR), with a peak of 20 Swainson’s Hawks noted from 4/8 through 4/10 in Fannin County (ebird JF).  Found in three counties, the peak of four Soras were tallied at RC WMA in Navarro county on 4/10 (PB).

Black-necked Stilts were restricted to the RC WMA, with a max of seven tallied in Navarro county on 4/10 (PB).  Single American Avocets were noted on 4/12 at LTW State Park in Hunt county (ebird RK), and at RC WMA in Freestone county (ebird TS).  While on 4/27 a single American Avocet was found at Tyler State Park (ebird KD), and two American Avocets were noted on the same date at Lake Gladewater in Upshur county (ebird LP).  A single Black-bellied Plover was reported from RC WMA in Freestone county on 4/17 (ebird DC,DL).  American Golden-Plover reports were restricted to RC WMA and LTW, with the max of 48 tallied on 4/14 at RC WMA in Freestone county (ebird JH,SL,JRa).  Also restricted to RC WMA and LTW, the max of two Semipalmated Plovers were found at LTW in Van Zandt county on 4/30 (ebird RK), and two Semipalmated Plovers were also tallied at RC WMA in Freestone county on 4/17 (ebird DC,DL).  A solitary Solitary Sandpiper was found in Titus county on 4/22 (DB,LB), while eight were tallied at Lake Fork in Wood county on 4/4 (ebird TK).  Lesser Yellowlegs were reported from five counties with a max of 60 noted at RC WMA in Freestone county on 4/17 (ebird DC,DL).  Reported from five counties the max of 24 Upland Sandpipers were tallied at LTW in Van Zandt county on 4/24 (ebird RK).  As far as I’m concerned, one of the finds of the month, were four Hudsonian Godwits reported from LTW State Park on 4/12 (ebird RK).  Three Marbled Godwits were found at RC WMA in Freestone county on 4/2 (ebird SH).  A Sanderling was found at RC WMA in Freestone county on 4/17 (ebird DC,DL).  Three Dunlin were reported from RC WMA in Freestone county on 4/10 (PB), while a single Dunlin was located at the same location on 4/17 (ebird DC,DL).  Baird’s Sandpiper reports were restricted to RC WMA in Freestone county with a max of 15 noted on 4/14 (ebird JH,SL,JRa).  Buff-breasted Sandpiper sightings were also restricted to RC WMA in Freestone county with a max of ten noted on 4/14 (ebird JH,SL,JRa).  Reported from five counties the max of 41 Pectoral Sandpipers was tallied on 4/14 at RC WMA in Freestone county (ebird JH,SL,JRa).   Thirty Semipalmated Sandpipers were separated from ten Least Sandpipers on 4/2 at RC WMA in Freestone county (ebird SH).  Two Western Sandpipers were tallied at RC WMA in Freestone county on 4/14 (ebird SL), while two were also reported from the same location on 4/17 (ebird DC,DL).

A Franklin’s Gull was reported from Lake Wright Patman in Cass county on 4/5 (ebird JK,LK), thirty Franklin’s Gulls were photographed in Fannin county on 4/10 (ebird JF), seven Franklin’s Gulls were found at Cooper Lake State Park in Delta county on 4/24 (DB,LB), while the max of 80 Franklin’s Gulls were tallied in Henderson county on 4/30 (ebird DC,DL).  The eastern most report of a White-winged Dove came from Tyler on 4/10 (ebird CS).  The first report of Chuck-will’s-widow came from Smith county on 4/14 (ebird MB).  The first Yellow-billed Cuckoo report for the area came on 4/29 in Tyler (ebird EV).  Two Red-cockaded Woodpeckers were reported from their normal haunts in Cherokee county (ebird LW).  Reported from nine, yes nine counties!  The eastern most Crested Caracara was noted in Titus county near the Mt. Pleasant airport (a repeat from last month) on 4/15 (LB).  A Merlin was reported from Tyler on 4/16 (ebird MB).  A Peregrine Falcon was found at RC WMA in Navarro county on 4/10 (PB), while four days later another sighting of a Peregrine Falcon came from the same location in Freestone county (ebird JH,JR).

The FOS Eastern Wood-Peewee was noted on 4/12 at LTW in Van Zandt county (ebird RK).  The first two Western Kingbirds reported for the area came from Cooper in Delta county on 4/24 (DB,LB).  Reported from four counties the first two Warbling Vireos were reported from Tyler State Park on 4/19 (ebird BS).  Restricted to three locations in Smith county the first Philadelphia Vireo report came on 4/14 (PB).  Three Horned Larks were noted in Red River county on 4/2 (DB,LB), while A Horned Lark was photographed in Fannin county on 4/10 (ebird JF).

Reported from three counties, the first Bank Swallow was reported from Van Zandt county on 4/2 (ebird RQ).  Reported on each day over a three day period a Red-breasted Nuthatch was tallied on 4/17 through 4/19 at Caddo Lake State Park (ebird SJ).  Found in five counties, the first Swainson’s Thrush was found on 4/16 in Henderson county (ebird DC,DL).   The first Wood Thrush for the area was reported on 4/10 at Daingerfield State Park (DB,LB).  

A Worm-eating Warbler was reported from Gregg county on 4/8 (ebird LP).  Reported from three counties, the first Northern Waterthrush was reported from Lake Gladewater in Upshur county on 4/15 (ebird MO, LZ).   Faulkner Park in Tyler produced a male Blue-winged Warbler on 4/15 (ebird CB).  Reported from three locations, the first Swainson’s Warbler was tallied in the Old Sabine Bottom WMA in Smith county on 4/15 (ebird MB).  Reported from four counties the first Tennessee Warbler was noted on 4/15 at Faulkner Park in Tyler (ebird CB), while the max of thirteen Tennessee Warblers were tallied at Pleasant Acres Lake in Smith county on 4/22 (ebird MB).  Reported from six counties the first Nashville Warbler was tallied on 4/2 in Van Zandt county (ebird RK), while the max of twelve Nashville Warblers were tallied at LTW in Van Zandt county on 4/24 (ebird RK).  

The first two Kentucky Warblers were reported from LTW in Van Zandt county on 4/24 (ebird RK).  The first American Redstart was found on 4/22 at Mineola Nature Preserve (ebird DP).  Reported from six counties the first Yellow Warbler was tallied on 4/22 at Texas A&M – Commerce Campus in Hunt county (ebird NB).  Always a neat one, a Palm Warbler was found at LTW State Park on 4/3 (ebird RK).  Found in several locations over four counties, the max of five Black-throated Green Warblers was tallied at Bellwood Lake in Smith county on 4/20 (ebird EV), and at Tyler State Park on 4/30 (ebird BS).  The first of season Yellow-breasted Chat was located at Mineola Nature Preserve on 4/9 (PB,LBe,JC).

Noted in three counties, the max of six Grasshopper Sparrows was recorded from Rains county on 4/23 (ebird BC,GC,SG).  The first report of Summer Tanager came from Van Zandt county on 4/7 (ebird RK).  A Scarlet Tanager was reported with no details from Caddo Lake State Park from 4/17 through 4/20 (ebird SJ).  Reported from eight counties with no higher of a max of three, the first Rose-breasted Grosbeaks were tallied in Morris county on 4/13 (LB).  The first Blue Grosbeak was found at RC WMA in Freestone county on 4/12 (ebird TS).  The first of the season Indigo Bunting was tallied on 4/10 in Daingerfield in Morris county (DB,LB,WB).  The first Dickcissels of the season were found on 4/24 near LTW (ebird BC,GC,SG).  A Bobolink was found in Red River county on 4/29 (ebird LS), while two Bobolinks were photographed in the same county on 4/30 (DB,LB).  Yellow-headed Blackbirds were noted on two dates at LTW in Van Zandt county, six were found on 4/12 and four were tallied on 4/24 (ebird RK).  The first Orchard Oriole was recorded at LTW State Park on 4/12 (ebird RK).  Found in six counties, the first three Baltimore Orioles were found at Tyler State Park on 4/19 (ebird BS).
